The Story of One Bracing Drink
The most popular drink in the world is coffee. You cannot imagine a day without a cup of this cheerful and aromatic drink. One cup of coffee in the morning, one during the lunch break, one while meeting your friends, and there so many occasions to take a cup in your hand and to make a sip of this wonderful drink and feel in a perfect bliss, to experience overwhelming joy and maybe even discover something new, during this moment. Did you know that a good cup of coffee encourages your creativity?
There are a lot of legends about coffee. So, one of those legends tells us how archangel Gavril brought a jar with a dark color elixir in it to Mahomet, who was laying in the article of death. They suppose it was coffee. Because of this healing drink, Mahomet stayed alive and unhorsed couple of dimes of the knights and built the most powerful Islamic empire.
Bracing and healing qualities of coffee trees for the first time were discovered in Ethiopia. Little by little small bushes with red berries were spread into southern Arabia, where Bedouins learnt how to make the tastiest drink. Arabs were making coffee in a special pottery. Arab troops were doing small attacks and large anabasis and everywhere they stepped, the coffee started to appear in those places. In Mecca the coffee was called the wine of Islam. Lots of pilgrims were taking the coffee out with them. Arabs were addicted to coffee so much, that in 1511 the highest spiritual ranks of Islam called the special coffee council. They decided that the drink was corrupting the brain of the faithful ones and it should be forbidden. It is an interesting fact, that at the same time, the wine was forbidden too.
But the coffee was already well-known in Turkey. The fist coffee shop in the world had been opened in Constantinople in 1554. To have a conversation while having a cup of coffee had become a custom in this country, so ruling by that time sultan Murad IV had to close all the coffee shops. More than 150 owners of the coffee shops were caught in one night and executed. Sultan was afraid of spreading the discord. These actions were not supported by his servants so sultan had to admit he was wrong and bring coffee shops back to life.
Nowadays in Europe it’s not a problem to have a cup of coffee at home or at your work place, but in 1592 the coffee was only considered to heal. It took time to make coffee be recognizable among Europeans and coffee shops started to open. Coffee became so popular, that beer and wine shop owners set their faces against it, because the coffee became a competitor to the wine and the beer. Coffee was announced outlaw, and there was a real war held against the coffee. Coffee was called a disgusting syrup from the dirty boots, a broth from the soot etc… But despite of all the prohibitions, in 17th century coffee became the favorite drink of the Hungarians, Italians, Germans, Swedish, Polish and French people and then became very popular worldwide.
By that time, coffee was an expensive drink only available for the rich people. Today it’s not that expensive and everyone can drink it at home, café or at a restaurant.
P.S. Here in Kommandcore we are enjoying coffee so much that we have bought a coffee machine. Now we are more than sure it encourages our creativity. So, have you noticed our black interface? It’s all because of the coffee, when we once spilled it…:)
